Browsing by tags

From Wikipedia:

A tag cloud (word cloud, or weighted list in visual design) is a visual representation for text data, typically used to depict keyword metadata (tags) on websites, or to visualize free form text. ‘Tags’ are usually single words and the importance of each tag is shown with font size or color. This format is useful for quickly perceiving the most prominent terms and for locating a term alphabetically to determine its relative prominence. When used as website navigation aids, the terms are hyperlinked to items associated with the tag.

CSGPN uses tags as a means to help identify topics and issues that can be covered across more than one project, as well as providing a quick means to search the website for popular topical content. The tags used on our site are in order of prominence, not alphabetical. This indicates how many entries on our website have been tagged with these keywords. As more entries are tagged, the keyword in the Tag Cloud will appear to grow in size. This assists members in searching our site for the most popular items and terms from our content. Tag clouds aren’t a replacement for the Search feature, but provides a fast means to access commonly searched content.

By placing the mouse cursor over the top of a keyword, you’ll see a Tip/Hint as to how many entries are available with that particular Tag/Keyword nominated.

Clicking on a keyword in the tag cloud will present a list of entries that have been marked appropriately, for example by clicking on the Fax or Bulletin keywords you will be given a result page listing all available entries on the site with these tags.

After ten years, the end is nigh for Internet Explorer 6

After ten years, the end is nigh for Internet Explorer 6

Microsoft are now pushing Windows users to drop the usage of Internet Explorer 6, a major campaign to demote their own product. Here’s the reason why.

From the official website:
“There are many benefits of upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer – improved speed, tabbed browsing, and better privacy settings to name a few. The web has changed significantly over the past 10 years. The browser has evolved to adapt to new web technologies, and the latest versions of Internet Explorer help protect you from new attacks and threats.
We recommend that Internet Explorer 6 users upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer for a safer browsing experience.”

What about corporate/business users?

Some users report that they use Internet Explorer 6 because they have to for work. Microsoft understand that IT organisations may have unique considerations, and have put together resources to help.

For CSGPN members, the issue faced with the usage of IE6 is the exposure to malicious attacks and increased security risk. Some websites are known not to display correctly or at all with the use of IE6 including our very own here.

For further information on what you can do, visit the official countdown to extinction website for IE6 at http://ie6countdown.com.

ABCs new Disability website

ABCs new Disability website

“Ramp Up, the ABC’s new website dedicated to all things disability. It’s a place to share our stories, our truths, our resources - to ramp up the conversation about disability in Australia. It’s a place for people with disabilities to have a say.”

Welcome note from website

Hello and welcome to Ramp Up.

I’m the editor Stella Young.

Ramp Up is the ABC’s new website dedicated to everything about disability.

But not in a whingy, daggy way. This is a website with attitude.

Ramp Up will feature columns from a wide range of people with disabilities that will entertain, inspire, delight and provoke. It’ll also be packed with the latest news from the sector, drawn from across the ABC.

This is a place to have your say, debate current issues and have a laugh about the weird and wacky situations us people with disabilities find ourselves in every day.

Like the time I dropped a can of chickpeas on my kitchen floor and could do nothing but make some fairly inedible hummus with my wheels.

Or that kid last week who asked me a highly pertinent question - “Are you imaginary?”
Disability brings challenges and amazing opportunities and Ramp Up will be the place to bring this rich, multi-layered community to life.

So stick around. Let’s ramp up the debate, have the discussions and raise our voices.

Stella Young, Editor Ramp Up,
ABC

Google Flu Trends

From their website:

“In 2004, when Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wrote to prospective shareholders about their vision for the company, they outlined a commitment to contribute significant resources, including 1% of Google’s equity and profits in some form, as well as employee time, to address some of the world’s most urgent problems. That commitment became a range of giving initiatives including Google.org.

Today, Google.org builds technology products to address global challenges such as climate change, pandemic disease and poverty. We focus our efforts on activities that are uniquely suited to Google’s engineering teams, global infrastructure and user-driven approach, taking advantage of our ability to innovate and scale. Our products and projects include Google Flu Trends, Google Powermeter, REC, Google Earth Engine and Google Crisis Response.”

CSGPN Corporate triathlon winners

CSGPN Corporate triathlon winners

Five teams of CSGPN representatives woke up in the wee hours of Sunday morning in preparation for the BRW triathlon series that months ago sounded like a good idea!
by Julia Thompson

We contemplated when and what foods should be eaten leading up to event, checked and doubled checked we had everything we needed and almost all of the CSPGN team decided they couldn’t face the task without their morning coffee.

After arriving before 6.30am to have our bikes checked in, the teams settled in with the other 4500 people waiting for our allocated time slots at 9.25 (female) and 10.10 am (men). Letting the waves of nerves, excitement (mainly for it to be over!) and apprehension to (including fear of sharks!) roll over us.

Miserable weather lead up to the event but a beautiful morning was produced just in time for our 400 m swim, 8km ride and 4km run.

All teams completed the race with some fierce competition between the male contenders. John Mulley our triathlon organiser, ran a great race completing the course in just over 35 minutes, followed closely by Philip Vita and our chief Dr Michael Moore who beat his time last year by 30 odd seconds. And in the process scraped in just in front of his wife Dr Candice Newberry, the fastest placed women for (40 minutes) CSGPN.

A big congratulations to all those who competed the race, including 11 first timers and to Sue Moxon who managed to complete the event with a migraine. It was a great day for all who came and next year we hope for even more team members and faster times for those returning.

The results
