On the 1st January 2012, the new Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011 came into effect. Under this new legislation there are changes to the obligations of employers and workers, as well as some changes to codes of practice and consultation processes. It is important to note that if a person or business had obligations under the previous legislation, they will continue to have similar obligations under the new legislation.
New codes of practice have been implemented to assist businesses to implement the changes. Some codes of practice which may be applicable to general practice include:
- How to manage work health and safety risks
- Managing the work environment and facilities
- Work health and safety consultation, co-operation and co-ordination
