Home and Community Care, ACAI summary of services

Lara Leibbrandt, Aged Care Nursing Officer - Wednesday 01 June, 2011

Reforms Reforms Reforms!
HACC (Home and Community Care)
The Department of Health and Ageing is set to take full responsibility for HACC funding from July 2012. So what exactly will this mean for HACC programs and your clients?

At present, not a great deal, as the Commonwealth has made clear there will be no changes to HACC programs and funding streams until after 2015. There will be a transition to the Commonwealth period and a staged approach to the reforms.

One of the changes DoHA plans to implement is ‘A New Front for Aged Care’:
  • A single national 1800 telephone number
  • Assistance for customers to navigate the system rather than people having to do this for themselves
  • Equitable access to services
  • A national assessment tool

ACAI - Summary of services provision across NSW for the 2010/11 financial year
Statewide the ACAI uptake has doubled - the number of Allied Health Services provided to aged care residents in Residential Aged Care Facilities has doubled in this last financial year compared to the previous year. The majority of services conducted are individual services (80%) with group services (20%). The top five allied health service areas comprise:

  • exercise physiologists
  • physiotherapists
  • certificate IV fitness trainers
  • podiatrists
  • dietitians

Other AHPs featuring regularly include specialist nurses and psychologists.

A further year of funding for ACAI has been announced with funding predicted to be at a similar level to previous years.

At the local level, managed by CSGPN, the ACAI continues to run successfully focusing on programs including:

  • falls prevention
  • pain management
  • behaviour management
  • nutritional assessments
  • speech and swallowing
  • diabetes prevention
  • foot care
  • exercise physiology
  • physiotherapy
  • diversional therapy and psychology
  • dietitian
  • speech pathologist
  • diabetes educator
  • podiatrist
