The Camperdown Project, announced in August 2009, is due to open its doors in October 2011. The Camperdown Project is a homelessness initiative comprising supported accommodation in a purpose built facility; the specially-designed building will be located on a site flanked by Pyrmont Bridge Road, Lyons Road, Lambert Street and Layton Street, Camperdown.
It is anticipated that many of the previously homeless people will have urgent primary health care needs and will be likely to require a local General Practitioner.
A mix of both on-site and off-site health services will provide a sustainable model of care to tenants of the project. We are currently sourcing expressions of interest from GPs in the local area who may wish to consider the following two options:
- On-site health services: Use of the on-site purpose built consulting rooms. Two consulting rooms located on the ground floor will be available for interested GPs to use on a sessional basis;
- New referrals: Tenants without a local GP may be offered a list of local GPs who have capacity to take on new referrals.
The building is scheduled to open in October 2011. The building manager, Mission Australia, has indicated that low income tenants will commence tenancies immediately with staggered intake of tenants with a history of homelessness to follow.
